Capsule Endoscopy (Pillcam)
The capsule endoscope utilizes a wireless video camera, small enough to swallow, to perform painless endoscopic imaging of the small intestine. Patients simply swallow the capsule and the camera takes and transmits pictures as it travels the entire length of the gastrointestinal tract. Hundreds of images are transmitted to a data recorder by sensors attached to the patient’s abdomen. The data recorder is later downloaded onto a computer for the physician’s review.
The pillcam assists in diagnosing gastrointestinal conditions such as malabsorption, abdominal pain, tumors, Crohn’s disease and infectious enteritis. It can often help your physician determine the cause for recurrent symptoms such as diarrhea, bleeding or anemia.
When the patient arrives at our office, we will attach the sensor leads to their abdomen and a halter belt which holds the data recorder will be put on over their clothes. The capsule is swallowed with a glass of water and the patient is given instructions on dietary guidelines for the day and what time to return to our office for removal of the sensors and halter.
Please follow your health care provider’s instructions completely when preparing for this test and call our office if you have any questions. The nurse will call you with the results once the physician has reviewed the downloaded images.
